Concise Tutorial: Creating Sub-videos in Video Cloud

In many occasions, you may upload long or extra-long videos like lectures, films, open courses or livestream recordings to your video hosting service. It is good for those audience who are really engaged to the content, but may not be good for new audience as the videos are too long and hard to seek for highlights.

You may ask, “How can I solve the problem without messing up or damaging the existed long videos?” The answer lies in the Sub-video feature in POLYV’s Video Cloud.

Sub-video is a section of the original video, which can be divided between any timestamps depending on your demand or the content of the video. With these sub-videos, the audience can be directed to the highlight or important content to make themselves understand the main idea of the original video.

Here we’ll show you how to create sub-videos from the original video –

1. After signing in POLYV, select “Video” to enter the admin page of Video Cloud.

2. Select “Videos” on the top navigation bar to enter the video list, then check the video for creating sub-videos and find the “Sub-video” section on the lower part of the right panel.

3. Click the “+ Add sub-video” button, and you can set up the following parameters for the sub-videos –

  • Title – The name of the sub-video
  • Begin time – The timestamp of the beginning of sub-video
  • End time – The timestamp of the end of sub-video

Note that the Begin time and End time can be set as current timestamp by the “Acquire timestamp” button on the right, and they are in seconds instead of the typical hh:mm:ss format. For example, if you want to mark the Begin time at 02:18, you should enter 138 (2*60+18) in the Begin time field.

Setting up the title and timestamp for the sub-video

Also there’s a code field below the preferences. These codes are auto-generated with the title and timestamps you typed in, and can be used in web players or mobile sites as HTML5 playback.

The code in the field can be used as sub-video playback in various devices

4. Click “Save” to finish the settings and close the popup window. Now you can see the sub-video listed in the right panel.

The created sub-videos are now listed and ready for playback

Here’s how it looks like after you click the play button of the sub-video.

The sub-video playback window

All of the actions above don’t make any modification to the original video, and you can add or remove the sub-videos anytime without damaging or overwriting your existing videos.

And that’s all for how you categorize your videos. If you want to know more about video hosting or our Video Cloud service, stay tune for our blog update, or check out our official website for more information.

Concise Tutorial: Video playback for different devices

As we have mentioned in previous articles, the videos hosted in Video Cloud are available for various devices, including PC, tablets and mobile phones using Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS or other operation system.

If you want to utilize the videos in your website or other situations, all you need to do is to embed a simple segment of code in the page or within your app.

Currently Video Cloud has 3 ways – Universal (JavaScript/JS), HTML5 and Flash – to embed the video in a page, as well as a “preview mode” for a 3-minute teaser to the audience by default. Here we will talk about these options one by one.

1. After signing in Video Cloud, click the “Videos” in the navigation bar.

2. Select the video you need, then find the code section under “Playback settings” on the right panel. You can see the four options listed on the tabs.

Playback code field in the right panel

(1) Universal – it contains a section of code executing the POLYV Player JavaScript (JS), with the parameter of the video ID as well as the style and size of the player. It is compatible with most of the devices like PC, Mac, laptop and mobile device, and available for playback in Windows, OS X, Linux, Android and iOS.

Since it is the most versatile option, we strongly recommend you using this if you want the easiest, widely supported solution for your video playback.

Code for universal playback

(2) HTML – it contains the code with the player style and video parameters within the <OBJECT> and tags. It is good for embedded or editable source-code pages used for HTML5 playback, especially in the mobile-friendly pages or sites.

Code for HTML5 playback

(3) Flash – it is the address of the Flash player designated for the specific video. You can see the video ID directly from the address. It is suitable in the page editor (like Dreamweaver) or other CMS like WordPress and Drupal; you can also paste the address in the browser for a direct playback.

Code for Flash player address

(4) Preview – it contains a section of code that is similar to the “Universal”, except it only allows playing the first 3 minutes of the video by default as a trailer or “teaser”.

Now that you understand the difference between these codes, knowing how and when to use it, you can now start making your video play in your site or pages with one or more of these options. 🙂
